Abstract-
Geometrical confinement at the nanometer scale strongly influences the physical properties of materials. There is a growing body of evidence from various experiments suggesting a strong
correlation between the physical properties of polymer films (polymers under one-dimensional confinement) and the strongly bound layer at the polymer/substrate interface. Understanding
the properties of irreversible adsorbed bound layers in polymer films is crucial but difficult to access experimentally. In this talk, I will present a novel method based on the swelling kinetics
of the polymer films to estimate the properties, such as thickness and density of buried compact bound layers at the polymer/substrate interface [1]. Moreover, I will talk about some recent
work from our lab in using polymer films as sensors, actuators and energy generators [2, 3, 4].
