Every piece of content released into the world has undergone a process of editing. Be it a book, an essay, a video, a song, or even an aerial display by fighter jets at an air show, in each instance, someone has had to make choices -- about what elements to include, what to leave out, and what to modify. What we finally get to read, hear, see and enjoy (or suffer) is the cumulative outcome of these choices. The art of editing is the art of making the optimal choices such that the product can be the best possible version of what its author set out to create.

G Sampath is a writer and journalist based in Delhi. He is currently the Social Affairs Editor at The Hindu. He was previously a columnist for Livemint. He was part of the launch team of Daily News and Analysis (DNA) in Mumbai and served as its literary editor from 2005 to 2012. His books include How to Make Enemies and Offend People (2013), a collection of non-fiction humour, Autoplay (2017), a book of short stories, and The Pleasure Principle (2016), an edited anthology of erotic fiction. He also pens the satirical Sunday column ‘Allegedly’ for The Hindu Sunday Magazine and hosts the In Focus series of current affairs podcasts.
