Meaty Matters: Caste & the Politics of Non-Harm in 18th Century Rajasthan

Through the latter half of the eighteenth century, the Rathor kingdom of Marwar in Rajasthan was the site of a large-scale campaign to outlaw violence against non-human animals. This effort consisted not only of idealistic decrees and directives but also of on-the-ground implementation through campaigns of fines, arrest, surveillance and even banishment of those found guilty of the ‘crime’ of taking animal lives. Based on extensive research into the administrative records of the Rathor court, this presentation will explore political mobilizations of the ethical ideal of non-harm, cherished in Jain and Vaishnav traditions, and the consequences of these mobilizations for caste and religious orders in this pre-colonial polity.
