About the Department of Life Sciences
Established in 2012, the Department of Life Sciences at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR, is a hub of interdisciplinary research and academic excellence. We offer a B.Sc. (Research) program in Biotechnology, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), featuring a 3+1 structure where the final year is dedicated to a full-time research thesis. The department also hosts a thriving Ph.D. program, making it a vibrant space for scientific inquiry and innovation.
Our research spans across several cross-cutting themes, including: Development, Tissue Regeneration and Repair; Microbes and Immunity; Neuroscience, Brain and Cognition; Disease Pathogenesis and Therapeutics; Evolution and Ecology; Plant Biotechnology, Climate Change and Sustainability; and Aging and Metabolism.
The department comprises ~19 faculty members and 5 fellows, all of whom are committed researchers and passionate educators. Our faculty actively engages in innovative teaching and mentorship, fostering an environment where collaboration leads to the emergence of new research ideas, groundbreaking projects, and high-impact discoveries. This synergy has helped us secure major research grants and publish in prestigious international journals.
The hallmarks of our academic program are the emphasis on critical thinking and scientific inquiry, hands-on laboratory training, diverse research opportunities, and a broad curriculum that spans multiple biological disciplines.
Currently, the department has 170 undergraduate students and 71 Ph.D. scholars. Our flexible curriculum also allows students to tailor their academic experience by combining majors and minors, preparing them for diverse career paths in the life sciences and beyond.
We are deeply committed to both teaching and research, with our initiatives aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our research contributes to enhancing agricultural efficiency, developing value-added products, promoting sustainability, reducing environmental impact, and much more.
Our department has achieved numerous milestones, including securing the highest number of extramural research grants within the University and publishing in reputed journals. Explore our recent publications from 2024-25.
Our vision is to lead in translational research and technological innovation with real-world applications. To support this, Shiv Nadar University has established a Centre for Integrative and Translational Research (CITRES) – a cutting-edge, 30,000 sq. ft. national facility for pre-clinical models for human diseases, the Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics, and the Revvity and SNU Centre of Excellence in Drug Discovery. Additionally, we have created world-class infrastructure in genomics, proteomics, and advanced imaging.
Thanks to our collective efforts, the Department of Life Sciences was ranked 21st in India by the Nature Index India 2023, recognizing our growing impact and national standing. We invite you to explore our website and discover the innovative teaching, cutting-edge research, and vibrant academic community that is dedicated to achieving even greater heights.
