Venkatesh Murthy is a neuroscientist interested in how collections of neurons in the brain process information and give rise to behaviors, particularly those involving the sense of smell. His research group studies olfactory behaviors in mice (and occasionally in insects and humans), attempting to decipher the brain mechanisms of this puzzling and dazzling sense. His lab uses electrophysiology, high-resolution optical imaging and optogenetic manipulation to understand the role played by olfactory neural circuit architecture in generating the neural correlates of behaviour. Venki is keenly interested in the connections between artificial intelligence and brain science, and has taught an undergraduate course at Harvard titled “Artificial and Natural Intelligence.” He came to Harvard University as an Assistant Professor in 1999 and is now the Raymond Leo Erikson Life Sciences Professor of Molecular & Cellular Biology, as well as the Paul J. Finnegan Family Director of the Center for Brain Science.
