  • Title: Rational Approximation and an Introduction to Transcendental Number Theory
  • Abstract: It is a well-known fact that  $Q$ is dense in $R$. However, to distinguish the real numbers, this fact may not be sufficient. Dirichlet came up with another way of rational approximation. Liouville used the Dirichlet type rational approximation and gave the first example of a transcendental number. Then the result of Liouville was improved by Thue, Siegel and then Roth. A vast generalisation of these type of rational approximation was done by Wolfgang Schmidt which is called `Subspace Theorem'. In this talk, we shall first prove the Dirichlet and Liouville results and then we state other generalisations.
