National Workshop on “Impact of Global Warming: Ozone Layer, 2018”

A National Workshop on Impact of Global Warming: OZONE Layer, (IGWOL2018) was organized by School of Natural Sciences at Shiv Nadar University in collaboration with National Environmental Science Academy (NESA). September 16 marks the 31st Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, a global agreement to protect the stratospheric ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Since its inception, the chlorine levels have gone down and the OZONE layer has recovered to some extent. There were around hundred participants who attended this event. Dr. Sushil Singh, SSPL, DRDO (Organizing Secretary) welcomed the eminent dignitaries and the participants to the workshop. Prof. Javed Ahmad, President NESA gave an introductory speech about NESA. Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor gave the inaugural address and highlighted the achievements achieved by SNU in a short span of time. Well known Environmentalist and Ecologist, Prof. C.R. Babu gave the Key Note address to the audience and shared some information from his experiments.

There were two Technical Sessions, consisting of three invited lectures each, one before lunch and the other after lunch. The first technical session  consisted of lectures from Dr. Sanjay Bajpai (Head, Technology Mission Division, DST), Prof. Manju Mohan (Head, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IIT Delhi) and Prof. Umesh Kulshrestha (Professor, School of Environmental Sciences, JNU).  A theme based poster presentation competition was also held in between the two technical sessions for which prizes were awarded to the winners.

During  the second Technical Session Prof. K.S. Rao (Professor, Department of Botany, DU), Prof. Jaswant Singh (Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr. R M L Avadh University, Faizabad) and Prof. Tanu Jindal (Professor & Director, Amity Institute of Environmental Sciences, Noida) shared some interesting facts and information about the OZONE Layer depletion.

At the end, Prof. C V Tomy (Director SNS) chaired the concluding session of the workshop in which Prof. C.R. Babu presented the certificates and memento to the winners of the poster presentation. Prof. Jyoti Sharma, Joint Secretary and Head CESE, SNU gave the details of activities in SNU for protecting the environment, before giving the Vote of Thanks to the eminent guests, participants and all the organizers who graced the event with their presence.
