Democracy, Ecology and Political Economy

24 Oct 2019
  • Prof. Rangarajan giving his talk.

The Department of International Relations and Governance Studies and the Centre for Public Affairs and Critical Theory jointly organized a lecture by Prof. Mahesh Rangarajan on 'Beyond Making Spaces for Nature: Engaging Political Economy as if Democracy and Ecology Mattered'.

Prof. Rangarajan, who teaches history and environmental studies at Ashoka University, spoke about the necessity of reimagining political economy in ways that deepen both democracy and genuine concern for ecology, and identified the means for doing so. Amongst themes covered in his talk were 'ecological patriotism' and the notion that peace with nature is key to peace amongst people. The lecture was pertinent given the current tension between imperatives of economic growth and preservation of ecosystems and democratic consolidation within India as well as globally.
