About

Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri is currently the K.N. Bajaj Chair Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.  He did his B.Tech. in Electronics & Communication Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from University of Calgary in 1987 and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1990 from University of California, San Diego.  He joined IIT Bombay as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering in November 1990.  He has held a number of important positions at IIT Bombay, such as, Professor In-charge, IIT Bombay-Monash Research Academy; Head, Dept. of Electrical Engineering; Dean (International Relations) and Deputy Director (Academic & Infrastructure Affairs). During the period April 2019 to May 2024, he served as the Director of IIT Bombay and stewarded it to reach an all time high QS world ranking of 118.   He has received several major national awards recognizing his research excellence, which include the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Swarnajayanti Fellowship, J.C. Bose National Fellowship, G.D. Birla Award and the NASI-Reliance Award among several others.  Prof. Chaudhuri was conferred with the title “TUM Ambassador” by Technical University Munich (TUM), Germany.  He is a Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), National Academy of Science India (NASI)  and IEEE, USA and has served on the Council of INSA and INAE.  He has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Kharagpur.  He was conferred D.Sc. (honoris causa) by Burdwan University. He has over 110 journal publications and 240 conference presentations with about 12,000 citations and an H-index of 51.  He has authored 8 research monographs, filed 13 national and international patents, and edited 2 books.  He has held editorships for several international journals.   He has guided 33 Ph.D. students and over 120 M.Tech. students.  He is a member of the CSIR Society, and the Governing Board of Indo-US Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF).
