Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR conferred honorary doctorate upon the world-renowned Physicist Dr. Alain Aspect and Padma Bhushan awardee, Ms. Arpita Singh at its sixth Convocation Ceremony on 24 July 2021, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the field of quantum mechanics and Indian art and culture respectively.

Dr. Aspect is currently Professor at Institut d'Optique Graduate School (Augustin Fresnel chair), in University Paris-Saclay, and at Ecole Polytechnique (Institut Polytechnique de Paris) and Emeritus CNRS senior scientist. His doctoral work in Bell's inequalities with entangled photons has contributed to settle a debate between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr, which started in 1935. He has subsequently worked on wave-particle duality for single photons; laser cooling of atoms with lasers below the one-photon recoil; ultra-cold atoms, quantum gases, and quantum simulator.

Dr. Aspect is a member of several science academies in France, Italy, the USA, Austria, Belgium, UK. Among many awards, he has received the CNRS Gold medal (2005), the Wolf Prize in Physics (2010), the Balzan prize on quantum information (2013), the Niels Bohr Gold medal (2013), the Albert Einstein medal (2013), the Ives Medal of the Optical Society of America (2013), Galileo Ferraris Prize (2015). Dr. Aspect has more than 200 research articles and several books to his credit.

In conferring Dr. Alain Aspect with an Honorary Doctorate, the Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, recognizes his outstanding contribution to the field of quantum mechanics. His incessant curiosity to push the horizons of knowledge resonates strongly with the University’s focus on research and innovation, its values, mission, and vision.

Padma Bhushan awardee, Ms. Arpita Singh

Padma Bhushan awardee, Ms. Arpita Singh, is a renowned artist and painter whose work is inspired by her surroundings. Her work repertoire boasts varied palettes from black and white abstracts to watercolour on paper to oil paintings on canvas. Ms. Singh's work has been featured nationally and internationally in more than twenty solo exhibitions.

For her artistic contribution, she was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2011. She has also been a recipient of several awards, including Fellowship of Lalit Kala Academy (2014), Kalidas Samman, Bhopal (1998), and Parishad Samman from the Sahitya Kala Parishad, New Delhi (1991).

In conferring Ms. Arpita Singh with an Honorary Doctorate, the Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR recognizes her contribution to Indian art and culture. She exemplifies the University's values, mission, and vision and provides a role model of integrity and artistic intellect for the University community.
