After serving the military for over 35 years, he retired earlier this year as Commander, Young Officers’ Wing at The Infantry School, Mhow (MP). Brigadier Ismail has extensive experience as a trainer and leadership coach. He has headed a career transition unit for soldiers about to enter civilian life, the NCC Women Officers’ Training Academy at Gwalior and the training team at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. During his career, he has earned five commendations, besides topping several Army courses and being conferred with the Army Training Command Scholar Warrior Award in 2020, for his work in enhancing the training curriculum at the Indian Military Academy. In 2008, he was awarded the Sena Medal for distinguished service.

A creative and original thinker, Brigadier Ismail is a motivational speaker and, in 2018, delivered a TEDX talk, “Confidence, Courage and Conviction.” He enjoys creative challenges and learning through working with diverse people. As Commandant NCC Women Officers’ Training Academy, Gwalior, he developed a curriculum focused on enhancing the self-belief, confidence and overall wellness of trainees. He is a fitness enthusiast, who enjoys running, cycling, horse riding and playing basketball, golf and badminton. Brig Steve Ismail is married to Meenakshi and they have two sons, Ivor and Russell, who are presently in high school and college. An alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Brigadier Ismail holds a postgraduate degree in Defence Studies.

At Shiv Nadar University, Brigadier Ismail will be responsible for Dean of Students office in areas including, but not limited to, student life on campus, student affairs, student discipline and others.
