What you will learn

1. Studying China in the 21st Century — methods, sources and analytical tools.
2. The Origins of Communism in China — the May Fourth movement, the founding of the Party, and the Yan'an legacy.
3. The Pre-Xi Era — Party and government as instruments of rule, from 1949 through the reform period.
4. The Communist Party of China: Ideology and Institutions — how the Party-state is structured and governed.
5. The Party and its Relations with Society and Economy — Party discipline, business, and ethnic politics.
6. The Communist Party of China in Xi's New Era — the politics of the core leader and contemporary political thought.
7. The Communist Party in Ethnic Regions — nationality policy, frontier governance and ethnic policy reform.
8. The Communist Party of China in Tibet — history and policy since 1950.

Who should join

Students and professionals interested in China's domestic politics, institutions and policy processes — including government officials, security analysts, business professionals and researchers. Open to all backgrounds; no prior China-studies experience required.

Assessment

Class participation (25%), a book or film review (25%), and a written assignment (50%).

Certificate

On successful completion, participants receive a certificate from Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence. This is a non-credit professional certificate programme and carries no academic equivalence with University degree programmes.
