Job Description 

Applications are invited for the post of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in an ongoing Research Project entitled Theoretical Investigations of High Energy Optical Conductivity and Anomalous Spectral Weight Transfer in Cuprates and Other Strongly Correlated Electron Systemsfunded by the SERB-DST [Early Career Research Award (ECRA) Scheme, ECR/2016/002054] under the supervision of Dr. Subhra Sen Gupta, Department of Physics, School of Natural Sciences (SoNS), Shiv Nadar University, Gautam Buddha Nagar, U.P.-201314.

Project Synopsis

The aim of the project is to develop the Methodology to Calculate the High-energy Optical Conductivity  and associated Anomalous Spectral Weight Transfer in realistic multi-band Correlated Systems, like the High-Tc Cuprates etc. The main goals are as follows :

  1. Developing the formalism and codes to calculate the associated spectral function, based on relevant Kubo Formulae,
  2. Using these to understand the origin of the various high-energy features and the strong Doping and Polarization dependence of the Spectra.
  3. Developing calculations and codes for the Finite Temperature versions of such spectra, to also look at the anomalous spectral weight transfer in these systems.

Essential and Desirable Qualifications

  • The candidate should have a Master’s degree (with a minimum of 55% Marks or equivalent Grade) in Physics from a UGC recognized University.
  • The candidate should have good analytical and computational skills, and a strong background in Condensed Matter and Many-body Physics, and should be motivated for research.
  • Some familiarity in Programming (preferably with Fortran 90/95) is needed. Some familiarity with computational techniques and use of software packages such as Mathematica and MATLAB is desirable.
  • Candidates with some acquaintance with the field of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems and related areas will be preferred.
  • Candidates should be NET qualified, to get full benefits. Other qualifications like JEST/GATE will also be given preference. (See also the “Fellowship” Section below.)

Duration of the Project

3 Years (March 2018 – March 2021) (Initial Appointment will be for a Period of 1 Year, extendable upon evaluation).


As per DST norms, fellowship is  31,000/- p.m. plus HRA as permissible for first two years. There will be enhanced fellowship in the third year (if, applicable) as 35,000/- p.m. plus HRA. [These rates apply only for NET/JEST/GATE qualified candidates. Without such qualification, a reduced rate, as allowed by DST and the University’s Policy, may apply].
