He obtained all his professional degrees, B.E., M.E., and PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He then worked for two years at Motorola India, before joining the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He worked at IIT Kharagpur for a little more than 30 years, initially as an assistant professor, later as an associate professor, and then as a professor. He also worked as Head of the CSE Department at IIT Kharagpur.

Obtained B.E.., M.E., and PhD degrees, all from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

At the start of his career, he worked as a senior software engineer with Motorola India for about two years. Then he shifted to IIT, Kharagpur, as an assistant professor. He subsequently took up  the position of senior lecturer at the Computer Science Department of Curtin University, Perth Australia. Later, he resumed as an associate professor at IIT, Kharagpur, and then became a full professor. He, at different times, he took up the positions of Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, Computer Centre, and Centre of Education Technology at IIT Kharagpur.
