The Department of Art and Performing Arts invites you to a talk titled ‘Dance and Disability: Agency, Representation and Politics’ by Akhila Vimla C. on 28 October 2021 at 12:30 PM.

About the Talk
Dance studies in India have engaged with the dynamics of cultural understanding of social, physical, and gender coding imposed on the body of performers. While a general consensus prevails that access to dance is something that demands a ‘normal’ and perfect/able body, the field of disability and performance has evolved to understand the nuances of body engagements through a different lens. Here, the speaker will be talking about Indian classical dance and its obsession with the dancerly body and how disabled performers in India are negotiating with the terrains of normativity and ability.

About the Speaker

In 2021, she received the New Scholar Award in Performance and Disability of the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) for her research in this field, which she has demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.
