Seminar by Dr. Pratap K Sahoo on "Lotus leaf effect of artificially synthesized hybrid quantum dots by ion beam dewetting"

Metal and Semiconductor alloys have importance for its unique properties for schottky contact and quantum information technology. This presentation will emphasize the bi-metallic nanomaterial synthesis which can also be called “quantum dots” using solid state chemically guided thermal annealing and extend the study of dynamic phase synthesis using ion beams along with thermal treatment. The advantages of dynamic method over thermal treatment will be explained on the basic of energy loss and diffusion assisted models. In particular, I will explain the methods in examples of our recent research work based on synthesis of Au/Ge, Au/Si and Au/Ni quantum alloy quantum dots by dewetting process. These quantum dot surfaces are very good for super hydrophobic application like lotus leaf effect. Thin films of Ge, Ni, Si with Au (5-10 nm) bilayers were used for dewetting in the temperature range of 350 - 900o C. It has been observed that after 500o C the Ge/Au alloys formed with almost uniform quantum dots of average size of 60 nm. As the temperature increases to 900o C the uniformity of the quantum dots improves. Room temperature photoluminescence has been observed in Au/Ge nano particles due to quantum confinement effect. The properties like strong absorption in the UV and visible range confirms the quantum confinement effect in Ge based Metal-Semiconductor quantum dots. The similar effect and mechanism will be explain for the quantum dot application
