Shiv Nadar University (SNU), Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), Delhi and China Report (a SAGE journal) recently collaborated to organize a workshop that trained and mentored young researchers in the craft of academic writing that is meant for publication. The workshop was a consequence of an MoU between SNU and ICS, India’s premier research institute on Chinese and East Asian studies, that aims at a comprehensive academic partnership. It was held at SNU, where the Department of International Relations and Governance Studies hosted it. The workshop reflects the commitment of the two institutions to build capacity and skills of young researchers to publish high-quality research in leading academic journals that will positively influence policy as well as inter-societal processes.

Fifteen doctoral candidates as well as early-career academics from different parts of India had been selected through a rigorous screening process that involved them writing their draft papers as part of workshop preparations. Over the 3 days, the particioants worked closely with faculty mentors, who belong to SNU, ICS and the China Report editorial team. The effort involved chiseling their draft papers (with active mentoring by select faculty specifically chosen for this workshop) and making them ready for submission for peer-review. The thematic and regional focus of the workshop pertained to China and East Asia, which are important to India from strategic, economic, political and cultural points of view. A special session on writing book reviews was also conducted by Ambassador Kishan S. Rana, formerly with the Indian Foreign Service. Speaking at the inauguration, SNU Vice Chancellor Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh emphasized the importance of such out-put driven academic activities. Ambassador Ashok K. Kantha, Director of ICS, underscored the importance of the having sound skills for academic writing. The workshop has successfully transmitted these essential academic skills to all the participants.
