The Taj Mahal: A Building for the Whole World

The Emperor Shah Jahan, the fifth ruler of the Mughal dynasty, built the Taj Mahal between 1632 and 1643/1648 as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. The monument  is India’s great contribution to world architecture and, as the contemporary sources reveal, it was  conceived as such  from the very beginning. The Taj Mahal was to be ‘the masterpiece of the days to come’, increasing ‘the amazement of all humanity’.   And indeed, the syncretistic power  of  the building  can speak to the whole world. The lecture discusses the open and tolerant policy of the Mughal dynasty which created the atmosphere for the conception of this amazing monument and presents a comprehensive reading of the Taj Mahal, its architecture, symbolism, the interaction of the monument with the city of Agra and its reception up to the present day.
