About the Talk
In the quest for carbon neutrality, most of us first think about how to generate electricity from renewable resources, such as through solar photovoltaics or wind turbines. But, improving how energy is consumed—increasing energy efficiency—is just as important. In fact, improving energy efficiency is usually less expensive than renewable energy to initially reduce carbon emissions. This presentation focuses on energy efficiency and demand response in the built environment, and discusses their potential and strategies for greatest impact. Finally, the presentation concludes with an overview of recent and ongoing research and development at the ASU Sustainable Energy Lab.

About the Speaker
Patrick “Pat” Phelan is a Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), and the Assistant Dean for Engineering Graduate Programs. He previously served as the Director of the National Science Foundation Thermal Transport Processes Program (2006 – 2008), and as Manager of the Emerging Technologies Program at the US Department of Energy Building Technologies Office (2012 – 2016). He received his BS degree from Tulane University, his MS from MIT, and his PhD from UC Berkeley, all in mechanical engineering. Following two years, as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, he began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii before moving to ASU in 1996.
