Department of International Relations and Governance Studies cordially invites you all to a talk on "The persistence of technological determinism".
There are now decades of theoretical and empirical work in philosophy of technology, STS, innovation studies and other fields which demonstrate the limits of technological determinism. Yet it remains in public discourses, from both policy makers and industry. In this talk, I will discuss some of the recent developments, highlighting the varieties of technological determinism. I will use some examples of recent work about artificial intelligence. The talk will end with an invitation to the audience to share their own examples of technologically deterministic thinking in India, and how we can best challenge determinism, wherever we live and work.
Dr. Sally Wyatt is professor of digital cultures in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. She originally studied economics, but she is now firmly based in the interdisciplinary field of Science, Technology and Society studies (STS).
