Archaeology and the Decolonization of Europe

As a discipline, archaeology emerged as a project of colonialism and modernity. In the last decades, communities and scholars from around the world started critiquing and challenging the coloniality that pervades western knowledge production. However, for those individuals and communities that had to bear with the human, social and cultural toll of colonialism it is no longer enough to critique the technologies of empire and its legacies. We must all work to undo it, everywhere we can—to decolonize. What happens when European archaeologists turn around and look at the old colonial metropolises through the decolonial lens? In this presentation Rui Gomes Coelho will speak about the extension of colonial projects into Europe, epistemic coloniality and how archaeology can be used as a tool of decolonization. He will discuss two archaeological projects: one focused on the anti-fascist guerrilla warfare in Croatia during WW2, and another about nation-state building and rural resistance in Portugal during the 1940s.
