Dr. Sumedha Moharana is serving as Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Shiv Nadar Institute of Eminence, Delhi NCR. Within the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) domain, Dr. Moharana is well known for her groundbreaking research related to the Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI) technique and piezo-based experimental/operational modal analysis (OMA) for civil structures, particularly in facilitating the transition from laboratory research to field applications. Notably, she has extensively worked on the adaptation of piezo-based SHM for reinforced concrete structures, rebar corrosion monitoring, and piezo-bond-structure modelling. Her research interests also include molecular dynamics simulation, net-zero carbon cement, conservation and SHM of heritage structures, and the application of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) approach to carbon-negative construction.
Dr. Moharana developed an Advanced Concrete Technology Laboratory and spearheads the Concrete Technology Laboratory to align practical skills with industry standards. She also established the NDT & Structural Health Monitoring Lab at the university and has strengthened it through consultancy and DST-funded projects. She has strong expertise in the analytical and mathematical modelling of smart materials, piezo-elasto-dynamic structures, shear lag effects, interfacial strain modelling, and PZT-structure interaction modelling.
Dr. Moharana has published over 36 papers in international SCI-indexed journals and more than 46 papers in international and national refereed conferences and workshops, largely in the field of SHM. She has co-authored the book Piezoelectric Materials: Applications in SHM, Energy Harvesting and Biomechanics (Wiley-Athena). Her pioneering publications on piezo-based SHM are highly cited by peers, with an average of 11 citations per article and an H-index of 14 in SCOPUS (12 in Web of Science).
Most of her research publications align with SDG-9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure). Her recent publications include work ranked among the top 25% most-cited documents worldwide, according to the Scopus database. She has completed several R&D projects sponsored by prestigious organizations such as the Department of Science and Technology (DST/SERB) and Dassault Systèmes Foundation. She has also completed several industry-based consultancy projects with HCL, TCS, and PNB Housing, translating research into real-world impact during her engagement at IIT Delhi as a Research Scientist.
Dr. Moharana organized the International Conference on Futuristic Technologies (FT 21), held from 22–24 January 2021. She has delivered over 15 invited talks, keynote lectures, and technical sessions at leading conferences and forums, positioning Shiv Nadar University as a hub for interdisciplinary innovation in civil engineering, smart infrastructure, and sustainability.
She was recognized for her Outstanding Contribution to Research and Sustainability under the Her Research, Our Future campaign at the Springer Nature India Sustainability Conclave 2025. She also received the Research Excellence Award as part of the SNU Annual Awards for the year 2025–2026.
