Certificate Programme in Mapping Global China (MGC)
Overview
Mapping Global China (MGC) is an eight-week online certificate course on China's global rise and the mechanics that shape it. After more than four decades of economic reform, China is deeply integrated into the global political economy: it is the hub of global manufacturing and a critical node in production systems across many sectors. The launch of the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013 widened that engagement considerably, particularly across the Global South.
The course explores the phenomenon of 'Global China' and the role of the ruling Communist Party-state in creating the ecosystem that supports it. Participants analyse the flows of capital, technology and soft power through which China tells its stories to the world — from institutional actors in foreign policy-making and Chinese companies as a geopolitical force, to infrastructure connectivity, new global initiatives, and culture and media. The course closes with a hands-on group exercise in which participants build their own strategy for a China-engagement scenario.
Rationale and need for this programme
'Global China' is discussed constantly but rarely taught as a coherent subject. No comparable standalone online certificate is available in India offering a dedicated, structured look at China's global engagement across capital, technology, infrastructure and soft power. MGC connects everyday touchpoints — electronics, cars, cuisine, science fiction — to the institutions and strategies behind them, and equips participants to form their own rounded perspective.
