When research samples are synthesized by physical or chemical methods, they generally contain various kinds of internal as well as surface defects. These intrinsic defects influence the fundamental properties of samples. High temperature thermal annealing in air or vacuum help to remove all these defects.

Thermal treatments can be done at 30-1000oC under vacuum in the range of 760 torr to 10-7 torr.

Thermal treatments can also be done under various flowing gases.
