Documentary has long since expanded beyond its traditional single-channel broadcast format, and the contemporary media/ art landscape today encompasses a wide range of material, media, processes and forms that come together to constitute documentary practice, including but not restricted to film, photography, performance, and installation. Recognizing the potential of this shift in documentary culture and its political, philosophical and poetic possibilities, we actively encourage and support research that explores “new ecologies” of documentary practice and its “expanded” forms. We value an interdisciplinary approach to research-based processes that allow for a deep engagement with diverse areas of study such as anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, law, STS, and life sciences among others. We believe in supporting research that deploys innovative methodologies and experimental approaches that expand the aesthetic and social impact of documentary art. The Department provides a dynamic context for experimental practice and critical thinking, thereby fostering an environment where practitioners and researchers can explore and expand the boundaries of documentary and make meaningful contributions to the field.
