Dance

Dance is emerging as an emerging area of research within academia even though dance and its traditions have long been an ingrained cultural practice and an area of interest for other academic disciplines. Research in the department locates dance as an embodied knowledge system, braiding dance scholarship and practice to generate critical debate about what it means to dance in the contemporary moment. Questions such as- How is the past performed through dance and what relationship does it have to the future? Where is dance performed, how, and by whom? What are the systems, economic, political and social, that govern, enable, and disrupt the ways in which dance is produced and understood? underpin research in dance in this department. Pushing the envelope, both methodologically and conceptually, of the ways in which dance is made, performed, read, and written, research in dance is an interdisciplinary space where crucial questions of access, politics, pedagogy, patronage, and embodiment are generated.
