Department of Life Sciences
The Department of Life Sciences in the School of Natural Sciences at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR, was established in 2012. All our faculty are actively running several research projects. Offering BSc Research program in Biotechnology (3 + 1 year, aligned with the National Education Policy, with the final year dedicated to research projects), alongside a significant cohort of PhD students, our department is at the forefront of scientific inquiry.
Our research spans across three primary thrust areas: Molecular and Systems Biology, Regeneration Biology and Translational Biology. We have also initiated research in the field of Cognition and Behavior.
Emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration, many projects involve partnerships worldwide, bridging the gap between academia and industry and offering avenues for promising careers.
With a commitment to sustainable development goals, our research endeavours aim to enhance agricultural efficiency, develop value-added products, promote sustainability, and mitigate environmental impacts. Notably, our department has achieved numerous milestones, including securing the highest number of extramural research grants within the University and publishing in reputed journals. The life sciences department has 18 regular faculty, one distinguished faculty, one distinguished visiting faculty, one senior scientist, and three faculty fellows. The department also comprises dedicated academic staff, administrative staff, lab staff, and technical officers who ensure efficient management of the department. Research within the department spans a wide spectrum, encompassing Cancer Biology, Cell Signaling, Epigenetics, Neuroscience, Genomics, Parasitology, Virology, Molecular Systems Immunology, Bioinformatics, Plant Biology, Bacterial Morphogenesis and Biofilms, Protein Folding and Stress Response, Chromatin Remodeling factors & Nuclear Receptor Signaling, Protein Structure Biology, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Evolutionary Developmental Biology, and Regeneration Biology.
Our vision extends beyond academic boundaries, aiming to pioneer translational research and innovate new technologies with broad applications. To facilitate this, our university has established the Centre for Integrative and Translational Research (CITRES), a state-of-the-art national facility (30,000 sq ft) equipped for experimentation with animal models. Recently, we established a Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics, and the new state-of-the-art laboratory at this center is now being used by the students and faculty. Additionally, we have created world-class facilities in genomics, proteomics, and imaging. With these resources, we are poised to tackle complex biological and healthcare challenges.
Recognized for our excellence, the Department of Life Sciences has been ranked 21st in India by Nature Index India 2023.
BSc (Research) in Biotechnology
At the undergraduate (UG) level, we offer BSc Research in Biotechnology (3 + 1 year as per the National Education Policy, with the final year for research project).
Currently, 117 undergraduate students are enrolled, with ample opportunities for research engagement and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Our flexible curriculum allows students to combine majors and minors according to their interests, preparing them for future careers in life sciences or any other chosen field.
