Department of English
The Department of English at Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence came into existence in July 2011 when the university was founded. Since then, it has grown exponentially. They have been published widely in India and abroad and have featured at eminent conferences and literary festivals. They have also held several prestigious fellowships, grants, and residencies. These include, among others, the Hawthornden Fellowship, the Andrew Mellon Fellowship at the Huntingdon Library, the Leverhulme Visiting Fellowship, the Vermont Studio Center fellowship, the TORCH Women in the Humanities fellowship, the Charles Wallace India Trust fellowship, the DARIAH-EU Open Education Grant, the Rockefeller Residency at the Bellagio Center and the Can Serrat Arts Center Residency.
As a department, we seek to combine intellectual rigor with continuous innovation inside and outside the classroom. To that end, we offer various undergraduate and graduate courses. Our excellent student-teacher ratio enables us to particularly pay close attention to how our students write—to help them approach academic and creative writing with critical rigor and imaginative reach, and effectively address specialist and general audiences. Our graduate programs come with substantial funding for teaching and research assistantships.
Over the years, the English department has attracted a talented cohort of undergraduate and graduate students. Our graduates have gone on to secure admission in M.A. and Ph.D. programs at stellar institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, Arizona State University, Dartmouth College, King's College, London, University of Edinburgh, University of California, San Diego, University College, Dublin, University of Melbourne and others. We also have alumni working in reputed organizations such as Ernst and Young, Deloitte, KPMG, Ogilvy PR Australia, Chase India, Centre for Policy Research, Azim Premji Foundation, HCL Technologies, Teach for India, SAGE, and others.
Formal admission into the B.A. and M.A. programs take place in August every year. Proposals for a Ph.D. are considered throughout the year, with formal admissions in August and January.
Freewheeler
Each year, The Freewheeler marks the culmination of the journey of several greenhorn creative writing students from the classroom to publication. For many of them, it is their first creative publication and the result of long and hard work that involves producing several drafts of their stories before arriving at the definitive draft that makes it to the pages of The Freewheeler.
