    Urbasi Sinha is an experimental physicist working on photonic quantum science and technologies. She joined Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence as Distinguished Visiting Faculty in the Department of Physics in September 2026. She is a Senior Professor at the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, where she heads the Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) Laboratory, and holds the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Photonic Quantum Science and Technologies at the University of Calgary, Canada.

    Her group builds heralded and entangled photon sources and uses them for secure quantum communication, quantum networks and precision tests of quantum mechanics. The QuIC Laboratory was among the first in India to develop and deploy entangled photon sources, has demonstrated free-space quantum key distribution between fixed and moving platforms, and led India’s first funded project on satellite-based quantum communication, in collaboration with ISRO. She leads QuEPRAN, a multi-institution quantum repeater network programme under India’s National Quantum Mission.

    As a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Quantum Computing, Waterloo, she led the triple-slit experiment (Science, 2010) that bounded higher-order interference and tested the Born rule. Her later work on nonclassical paths, macrorealism, certified randomness and entanglement dynamics has appeared in Physical Review Letters, PRX Quantum, Communications Physics and Physical Review A.

    She studied physics at Jadavpur University and the University of Cambridge, where she was a Nehru–Chevening Scholar and then a Gates Cambridge Scholar for her PhD. Her honours include the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar: Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Physics (2024), the Gates Cambridge Impact Prize (2025), recognition as a Quantum 100 honouree of the International Year of Quantum (2025), the ICTP–ICO Gallieno Denardo Award (2018) and a Royal Academy of Engineering Distinguished International Associateship (2024). She is an Associate Editor of Reviews of Modern Physics and co-founded QuSyn Technologies, which develops quantum random number generators.
