Artist In Residence 2024: Open Call
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The Department of Art, Media and Performance invites applications for our Artist-in-Residence Program for the year 2024. Aligned with the educational ethos of Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, our department follows a learner centric approach. Students and teachers collaborate as peers engaging in the production of knowledge through critical practice. Teaching takes the form of seminars, exhibitions, workshops and individual mentorship along with taught classes. The Artist-in-Residence Program reflects our aspiration to create a space that promotes experimental approaches to creative arts pedagogy.
Our first international resident, Merv Espina from The Philippines, joined us for a transformative three-month period in January 2023. During his residency, Espina immersed himself with his research, exploring artistic contexts in Delhi, Bangalore, Kochi and Kathmandu. During his residency, Espina immersed himself in his research, exploring new ideas and expanding his artistic practice. He gave several talks across the city, enriching the creative community in Delhi. Our students had the invaluable opportunity to engage deeply with his work and benefit from his insights and expertise.
We invite artists to immerse themselves in our vibrant community and contribute their unique perspectives and practices.

ELIGIBILITY
We encourage people working in the fields of contemporary art, photography, performance, cinema, dance and writing to apply. Emerging and Mid-career artist (under the age of 45), either national or international, are encouraged to apply.
RESIDENCY INCLUDES
- One time local/ international air ticket (economy) to & from New Delhi
- One time pick & drop to the Indira Gandhi International Airport
- Travel to Delhi-NCR (a shared taxi to and from SNIoE campus biweekly to a central point in Delhi)
- Insurance (for international candidates)
- Visa Fee (for international candidates)
- Accommodation (a one-bedroom suite at Eagles Nest, the SNIoE Visitor’s Hostel)
- Meals Tickets (breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the university dining hall)
- Usage of faculty club (with a gym, heated pool, pool table, badminton café , reading room etc. )
- AIR Studio (on SNIoE campus, accessible 24 hours)
- Access to SNIoE equipment, media labs, dance studio and sculpture lab
- Production grant (TBD on the nature of proposal)
- Honorarium (USD 1000/month)
- Venue for sharing the work as outcome or work in progress (Wetlands Art Space, SNIoE)
RESIDENT ARTIST’S OBLIGATIONS
- Artist in residence talk (at the commencement of the residency)
- AIR studio at F block to be interactive space accessible for art students and faculty.
- Public talk towards the end of the residency period at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art/ SNIoE
- Attend MFA students’ Project Room critiques as external resource person (once a fortnight) and give feedback along with faculty
- Attend MFA mid semester critiques and give feedback along with faculty
- Student interaction through studio presence at F block MFA Studios
- Open studio event
- A 1500 word report on the artist’s research and practice undertaken during the residency period
PLACES OF INTEREST CLOSE TO SNIOE
Dadri (3 km) is the closest town to the university. The market street is vibrant and a source for daily essentials. Large areas Dadri are wetlands and home to blackbucks, nilgai and migratory birds. The wetlands extend to the SNIoE campus and parts of these have been conserved.
Bulanshahr (31 km) is district level town with an ancient history dotted with colonial monuments. SNIoE in collaboration with the Kala Chaupal Trust is working on several projects engaging with the history and socio-cultural significance of Bulandshahr. The historical town of Sikandrabad is about 14 km from the campus and is well connected by road transport.
Khurja (45 km) is also called the Ceramics City. It is known for its pottery industry dating back to the 14th century.
New Delhi (61 km). The national capital of India offers a gamut of historical and cultural experiences. The city is about an hour by road from the campus and can be reached by private taxis. Public transport via buses and metro is also an option.
Meerut (71 km) is an ancient city and the easternmost settlement of the Indus Valley civilisation. It is one of the most important industrial cities of Uttar Pradesh and is well known for handloom works.
Indor Khera archelogical site (84 km) has been under excavation for the last 5 years as part of the Indor Khera Archaeological Project (IKAP) which resulted in a mass of data in the form of artefacts and ceramics.
