Profile Summary 

Prof. Tomy completed M.Sc. (Physics) from IIT Madras in 1984 and received his Ph.D. from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, in 1991. He was selected for the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt fellowship and worked at the University of Koln, Germany, for over a year. He then moved to Warwick University, Coventry, UK, as a research fellow, and subsequently accepted a visiting faculty position at IIT Kanpur. He joined IIT Bombay in December 1998 as an Assistant Professor in Physics, and rose to become a Professor, the Head of the Department of Physics and an Institute chair professor.. 

Prof. Tomy's basic research interest is in experimental condensed matter physics, and in particular, in magnetism and superconductivity at low temperatures. He has published over 140 papers in international journals, and guided several Ph.D. students.

Prof. Tomy is married to Ms. Beena Tomy and have two children, Gregory Nihar Tomy and Calvin Nikhil Tomy. His hobbies include reading books and watching football games.
