Job Description 

Applications are invited for the post of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in a DST funded research project entitled “Development of  new Mg-S Battery Chemistry and Electrodes through Synthesis, Characterization, and Simulations" MES 2017: DST/TMD/MES/2K17/66, under the supervision of Dr. Priya Johari (https://physics.snu.edu.in/people/faculty/priya-johari), Department of Physics, School of Natural Sciences, Shiv Nadar University, Gautam Buddha Nagar, U.P.-201314.

Project Synopsis:

The aim of the project is to have a detailed study of Mg-S batteries, using experimental and computational techniques, with major objectives as:

a)      Synthesis and exploration of environmentally benign industrially viable copolymers of sulphur nanocomposite and Mg as materials for Mg-S battery.

b)      Fabrication of cell by utilization of synthesized electrode materials.

c)      Develop and advance understanding of experimental results (synthesis and characterisation) with theoretical calculations to provide a mechanistic aspect.

Nature of work:

Extensive ab initio calculations will be performed to understand and explain the reaction mechanism by investigating the formation of all stable and metastable Mg-S stoichiometries.  Furthermore, change in structural, electronic, electro-chemical, and mechanical properties during charging-discharging process in Mg-S battery will also be studied using quantum mechanical codes, in order to support and guide experiments.

Essential and Desirable Qualifications:

·           The candidate should have a Master’s degree (with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade) in Physics from a UGC recognized University.

·           Candidate should be NET qualified. Other qualifications such as JEST/GATE will be preferred. Candidate without such qualifications will be hired at a salary based on the experience.

·           The candidate should have good analytical skills.

·           Familiarity with computational techniques and use of software packages such as VASP, Gaussian, etc. is desirable.

·           Familiarity with linux environment is desirable.

·           Candidate with some acquaintance with density functional theory will be preferred.

Duration of the Project:  3 Years

Contract Tenure:  1 year and can be extended further based on satisfactory performance.


As per DST norms, fellowship is ₹25,000/- p.m. plus HRA as permissible for first two years. There will be enhanced fellowship in the third year as ₹28,000/- p.m. plus HRA
