The Department of Economics invites you to a virtual talk titled 'Proportional Systems with Free Entry: a Citizen-Candidate Model' by Dr. Sandro Brusco, Professor of Finance, Stony Brook University, New York, on March 26.

Abstract of the Talk
We analyze equilibria of a proportional electoral system with free entry in a citizen candidate model. In proportional systems a perspective entrant has to worry about the governing coalitions that will be able to reach 50% of seats. We adopt a very general model of government formation and show that there are equilibria with medium-sized parties, i.e. no party has absolute majority but the number of parties is relatively small. When the number of seats is sufficiently large, all equilibria must have at least 4 parties. Differently from models with a fixed number of parties, our model can be used to evaluate changes in the electoral formula and we discuss the impact of the introduction of thresholds for representation.
