Physics Research Seminar by Dr. Avijit Kumar on “Electronic Properties of Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks”

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials where molecule and metal forms coordination bonds and present immense structural tuneability and synthetic flexibility [1]. Two-dimensional (2D) MOFs, a designer class of material, have been predicted to possess exotic electronic properties such as topological insulators and quantum Hall insulators [2]. A number of such structures, synthesized on various metal substrates, results into their electronic properties getting strongly perturbed owing to strong interaction with the underlying metal substrates. Therefore, it becomes imperative to synthesize 2D MOFs on inert substrates such that their intrinsic electronic states are decoupled from the underlyingsubstrates [3]. To this end, we have synthesized 2D MOFs using two different linker molecules (Dicyanobiphenyl (DCBP) and Dicyanoanthracene (DCA)) and cobalt on weakly interacting epitaxial graphene on Ir(111)(G/Ir(111)) surface. Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS), and non-contact Atomic Force Microscopy (nc-AFM) at 4.2 K, we show that 2D MOFs form honeycomb networks of different periodicities. Using STS (dI/dV spectra and mappings) measurements, we also demonstrate that 2D MOF with the shorter and planar linker (DCA3Co2) form twodimensional band structure which is also complemented by DFT calculations [4]. This result opens up the experimental path towards MOF-based designer electronic materials with complex, engineered electronic structures.
