3-D NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF DAM BREACH FLOW DUE TO OVERTOPPING

Dam breach flow (DBF) analyses are important, as these are associated with losses of lives and properties. The seminar focuses on two different kinds of dam breaches, planar and spatial. In the planar DBF, the over-topping covers the entire dam length. However, in spatial dam breach, the over-topping is though a pilot channel and the evolution of the pilot channel is a measure of breaching. A popular CFD software, FLOW 3D, is used to simulate both kinds of DBFs. 3-D RANS equations for water flow, RNG for turbulence, VOF for free surface tracking and scour model for breaching are used. The numerical results are validated against the experimental studies conducted in the Hydraulics laboratory at IIT Gandhinagar. For planar DBF, effects of dam height, top width of dam and downstream slope of dam on breach discharge and breaching rate are evaluated. For, spatial DBF, effect of pilot channel on the breaching process is studied. Important recommendations for conducting experiments are found out. Effect of different turbulence models on DBF is also studied
