Systematic Investigations of Polymorphism, Photodimerization and Charge-Transfer Mechanism in Organic Optical Materials: Probing Structure Property Relationships

Optical materials such as organic push-pull chromophores are substances which can modulate the frequency of light upon interaction with it. Such materials find myriad of applications as frequency modulator, semiconductor, non-linear optical (NLO) and photo sensitive materials. The thesis includes rational design, synthesis and systematic physico-chemical characterizations of push-pull chromophores leading to the discovery of polymorphs, visible light induced photodimers and potential NLO and fluorescent materials. While one of these materials demonstrated its potency as semiconductor the others are characterized as self-photosensitizers or switching materials under thermal and solvent stimuli. Accordingly, the thesis evidences the discovery of a series of novel organic multifunctional materials.
