About the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at SNIoE offers academic programmes and courses that reflect the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary vision of the university. The curriculum provides a strong foundation for higher studies as well as diverse career opportunities in industry. Mathematicians are in high demand across sectors such as investment banking, insurance, financial services, engineering consultancy, medical research, bioinformatics, software development, cybersecurity, and defense. Graduates are also well prepared for advanced research programs at leading universities worldwide. Currently, the department offers B.Sc. (Research) in Mathematics and Ph.D. programs. In addition, the department is launching a new undergraduate programme, B.Sc. (Research) in Computational Mathematics and AI, from Monsoon 2027.

A defining feature of our programs is the seamless integration of hands-on work and active research into every stage of study.

Other distinguishing features are:

·     We have worked extensively towards dissolving the artificial boundaries that traditionally separate pure and applied mathematics, as well as those between mathematics and other disciplines, fostering an environment where theoretical depth and practical application reinforce each other.

·     Strong emphasis is placed on modern computational skills and project-based learning, with students regularly engaging in work that addresses real-world problems.

·     Our programs are designed to be accessible to students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, ensuring that mathematical excellence is not limited by prior exposure or circumstance.

The faculty bring expertise spanning a broad spectrum of pure and applied mathematics, including functional analysis, differential geometry, number theory, representation theory, quantum groups, complex networks, mathematical modelling, statistics, mathematical finance, mathematical biology, and machine learning. Having studied or worked at leading institutions around the world, they maintain an active and internationally recognized research presence, with publications in journals of high global repute. With sixteen faculty members, the Department is well-positioned to offer a rich and diverse range of courses, seminars, and academic activities.

Activities and Recognition:

The Department has built a strong record of academic achievement and community engagement. In 2015, we were awarded the prestigious DST-FIST grant, which enabled the establishment of a dedicated Departmental Research Computer Lab and a Department Library, resources that continue to support faculty and student research. We have also taken an active role in the national mathematical community by hosting and organizing several significant conferences and instructional programs, including the Annual Foundational School, the Advanced Instructional School, the Annual Conference of Indian Women in Mathematics, the Annual Conference of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society, the National Conference on Cross-Disciplinary Applications of Networks, the Discussion Meeting on Zero Mean Curvature Surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski Space, and the National Conference on Operator Theory and Function Spaces, among others. The computational facilities include a high-performance IBM cluster (“Magus”) consisting of 57 compute nodes (8064 cores) with a total capacity of 320 TFlops of Theoretical Peak Performance. Additionally, several stand-alone Linux workstations are used for teaching and research.
