Professor Ghosh started her research career in the field of Quantum Optics with a Ph.D. at the University of Rochester, NY, USA, in 1987. She joins SNU after 23.5 years of service at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. She has held many important academic and administrative positions, as Dean, School of Physical Sciences, Director, Academic Staff College, Chairperson, Committee for Reviewing the Admission Policy and Procedures, Chairperson, Gender Sensitisation Committee against Sexual Harassment, Founding Member, Standing Committee on Alumni Relations and International Linkages, Founding Member, Environmental Task Force in JNU, and Chairperson, Committee against Sexual Harassment, IISER, Kolkata, Member, Scientific Advisory Committee, Nuclear Science Centre, New Delhi, Member, Advisory Council for Einstein Bhavana, Visva-Bharati (Central University), Santiniketan, Selection Committee Member in many institutions, etc.
She has held several Visiting Faculty/scientist positions on invitation abroad, and delivered numerous research seminars in India and abroad on invitation.
Other than teaching, research and administration at the University level, she has served as the Chief Advisor for the new NCERT Science textbooks for Class IX and Class X in 2005 and 2006. She is also well known for her role as an expert/Delhi Coordinator in the interviews for selection of students under the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), DST since its initiation in 1999.
