Art Design and Performing Arts
In keeping with the University’s emphasis on interdisciplinary research and
situated experiential learning, the Department of Art, Design and Performing
Arts nurtures rigorous and thoughtful praxis in these disciplines and their
interface with questions of society, culture and politics.
This year the department is offering a Masters in Fine Art. This is a
full-time, two-year (4 semester) studio-based and research-centered
programme, starting in August 2014. Depending on the students’ requirement
and discretion of the mentors, this can be extended to another semester.
The unique feature of this MFA Programme is that each student works with
three mentors from a faculty of practicing artists, visiting as well as
guest faculty/advisors, drawn from the best contemporary artists and
theorists of India. Apart from this, the department will offer the Masters
students individual art studios, project spaces, cutting edge production
workshops, multi-media labs, and a dedicated library and visual resources
facility. The emphasis of the programme is on practice through collaborative
means as well as systematic processes of enquiry leading to the production
of knowledge. Also central to the department is the idea of a
multidisciplinary and open-ended environment where students may chart their
own course of study, emerging at the end of the two years as critical and
self-reflexive scholars and practitioners.
While at present the department only offers graduate degrees, we are
committed to SNU’s ideal of a holistic undergraduate education and are
striving to make Arts Education central to the Undergraduate Curricula at
the University. To achieve this, the department not only offers University
Wide Electives (UWE’s) in Visual and Built Environment Studies, Design,
Dance, Theatre and the Visual Arts but has also fashioned a Minor Programme
in the Arts, open to students across the university: this provides a basic
grounding on the context of the Arts within India as well as the scope for a
deeper engagement with one discipline.
