Dr. M Gopal is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director Emeritus, School of Engineering. Dr. Gopal joined SNU in 2011 as the founding Director of the School of Engineering. From the development of the School’s curricula, to hiring and mentoring of the faculty and teaching graduate and undergraduate classes, Dr. Gopal led from the front in every major aspect of the development of the School in its initial years. Dr. Gopal joined SNU after a long and stellar career at Indian Institute of Technology which included heading the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi. His teaching and research stints span three decades at the IITs. He is a globally known academician with excellent credentials as author, teacher, researcher, and administrator.
Dr. Gopal is the author/co-author of six books on Control Engineering . Some of his works have been translated into Chinese and Spanish. In India, his books have been serving as the major source of learning for about three decades.
As a teacher, his potential is being used globally through a video course (http://www.youtube.com/iit
) - one of the most popular courses on You Tube by the IIT faculty.
Dr. Gopal is an eminent researcher in the area of Machine Learning. He is the author/co-author of over 135 research papers; the key contributions have been published in high impact factor journals. He has supervised 16 doctoral research projects. His research interests lie in the areas of Soft-Computing Technologies, Pattern Recognition, and Intelligent Control.
In his administrative capacity, he contributed to the growth of a large department at IIT Delhi with electrical (power), electronics, communications, computer technology, and information technology as the areas of activities. The department has acquired a respectable international standing in both teaching and research.
Dr. Gopal holds B. Tech. (Electrical), M. Tech. (Control Systems), and Ph.D. degrees from BITS, Pilani.
